WHY I COACH. – BY HOGANS.

Crappy 6am photo taken by TB. Sorry Hogie.

This week I’ve asked our coaches to each take the question, “Why do you coach?” and put their thoughts to paper. We do this once a year with our members and have found that these posts have far more of an impact than my daily drivel.

Leading the week off is Hogans and her thoughts on why she coaches. Enjoy.

Why I Coach

By Hogans

The reason I coach has a lot to do with the reason I participate in Crossfit at all: I love the community aspect of it. I love cheering others on; whether I am an athlete sweating beside them or a coach offering words of encouragement.

When I walked in the doors of 209 Anacapa a little overt two and a half years ago I really had no idea what I was in for. After doing my intro with Traver,, I was hooked. Right away I noticed how different the coaching style was from other “athletic trainers” I had experienced. I loved how Traver and Eric explained the why and how behind everything rather than just telling me what to do. It was then that I began to realize they CPC truly was a “school of fitness.” I found myself wanting to know more so that I could improve my form and performance in the gym.

I began to notice as well the amount of enthusiasm Traver, Eric and Baker had for what they did. Those of who have ever witnessed/experienced Malzone jumping up and down screaming to push harder to drive that bar up OR Traver saying “you can f#%&ing do this” with a firm pat to your shoulder/ rear side (just to be clear, I have never given Hogans a firm pat on her “rear side” – tb) OR Baker taking that extra time to help someone with their mobility prior to or post WOD know exactly what I am talking about. Our coaches kick ass…. Not jut because they know their shit but because they care, they are enthusiastic and they have FUN coaching.

So, wanting to expand my knowledge and pass that knowledge on to others in an enthusiastic way, I headed off to get my level 1 certification. I learned a ton and it became ever more clear that:

“CPC has kick ass coaches!

Traver, Eric and Baker are amazing, phenomenal coaches! The message from the HQ trainers at the cert was all about form and fundamentals and our guys do an outstanding job of coaching us on during every WOD. I actually felt more at ease and comfortable with the certification because of this.

I kept hearing the little cues I get from them all the time in my head during the fundamental movement sessions and during the test. The coaching we are getting at CPC is second to none. If you walked into another CrossFit box anywhere, you would walk in, demonstrate solid form and crush any WOD they throw your way. We are being taught how to do the movements with the best form possible from three people who are passionate about making us stronger and faster.”

I have now been coaching for little over a year and I have to say I love it even more than I thought I would. I love watching people accomplish things they think they cannot. I love watching people push themselves to the limits. I love yelling at people…. I mean encouraging them to do their best! I love sharing something that has had a huge impact on my life.  Thank you CPC’ers for giving me that awesome opportunity.

Sweet write up Christina. December 12th 2010 was the day we both got our certs. That was an awesome day, and set up a lot of great things for our lives. It was great getting my cert with you, and an honor to have you in the community. Keep doing what your doing and we'll see each other again one day for a wod.

Hogans! Thank you for yelling at me for the past couple years! You are a great coach and I can't wait to enroll my kids into your WODs.

I'll never forget the day Hogans helped me get through Nancy Rxed. I wanted to quit about 27 times, but she kept by my side during those very hard OHS, and I completed that ish. Thanks sister! You're a fantabulous coach. (p.s. Augie did Nancy with only socks on that day -- a very memorable WOD indeed.)

Although I haven't seen much of you lately I absolutely love it when your coaching and also when we're working out together - keep up the awesome work!

It's always been a pleasure working with you Hogies, keep it up!

Great pic Hogies! Even though there doesn't seem to be anything on the whiteboard that you would be pointing at. Christina has an incredibly strong grasp on the fundamentals of CrossFit and she's been outstanding with the ZAT and kid's programs here at CPC. We're very luck to have her. It's unfortunate her husband is a Raiders fan.

Thanks for coaching us Christina! You really have a knack for it and a good eye. Your tip not to exhale at the bottom of a squat or lift continues to bear fruit -- I was not even aware I was doing it until you pointed it out. Claw
