WATER WORLD
ByOn Saturday afternoon, a brave group of CrossFitters threw caution to the wind and jumped into the deep blue abyss known as Los Banos pool in Santa Barbara, CA. Our first H20 Seminar was a blast! We worked on the basics of flotation and treading water as well as the finer points of swim stroke technique. I witnessed some drastic improvements over a short period of time and provided numerous drills that will lead to efficient and fast swimming.
So the big question here is…can Zombies swim? Well, my research has been inconclusive thus far. But, what we do know is that A-Train, Keala, Lauren, Phil, Fielding, Jason, Justin, Zeb, Sean, and Diso can now feel that much more confident while anticipating the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse!

Today’s WOD sparked the question I often wonder about similar workouts — Is it more beneficial to do Rx’d weight (if you can physically do it), or is it recommended to scale down so you can complete it as unbroken sets? Maybe rx’d so you can see your progress would be better?

I was a bit nervous for the H2O seminar. Afraid of being lapped in the pool by expert swimmers as I battled to keep myself from drowning. It was not like this at all! Malzone started with the basics, fine tuned our strokes, had swimming drills with and without the kick boards and ended with a swimming WOD. It was a fantastic seminar! I learned a bunch and feel so much more comfortable in the water. I actually want to go to the pool to practice swimming now. I would definitely take the seminar again. Thanks Malzone!!!

Alex, your question involves physics. Hope you were paying attention in class! “Work” is moving mass over distance. “Power” incorporates a time element; i.e. the same “work” done faster requires more “power” than if it was done slower.
Lots of Crossfitters have discussed this, including Nick at Goodland. Check out these links:

Just wanted to give a shout out and thanks for hosting us PCF’ers on Saturday. Great team WOD (even if the Five Fingers of Death team was a bit ‘stacked’ for the victory
and team Non Pukey Bucket represented! lol! I’m sorry I wasn’t able to take part in the swim seminar but a *GREAT* day up in Santa Barbara nonetheless.
Oh and Malzone I have 1 more thing to add – GO NINERS!!! LET’S GO GIANTS!!!

As you can see I was the worst swimmer in the class and had to bring the wings to stay afloat. The class was excellent in teaching me the proper basic techniques to swim. This was my first formal swimming class and I was able to shed my water wings at the end! Hopefully there will be more H2O sessions in the future.
