Kate in the preferred post workout position!
This past Sunday I had the good fortune to sit down to dinner with a few old-school CrossFitters as well as a few friends from acupuncture school and a one person who was both. When the waitress came around I knew to order water with no ice for the acupuncture people. Why?
According to Chinese Medicine, cold paralyses the stomach and forces heat that should be used for digestion to be used as a means of heating up the ingested water. Per Paul Pritchford again, “Drinking water with meals dilutes the digestive juices. However, a small amount of warm water – four ounces or less – is acceptable. In general, drink water or herbal teas ten to twenty minutes before the meals and at least half an hour after fruit meals, two hours after a meal rich in starches and plant proteins such as grains and legumes, and four hours after a meal containing meat, eggs or dairy products.”
(Ice cream however, if eaten after a hard week of training, has been proven by some random study somewhere to be beneficial to all aspects of one’s health. I swear it.)
This week’s Sweet Cheek Awesomness:

Rosemary trout with spinach
12 ounces of spinach
1 1/2 pounds trout, head and tail removed, cut in half with skin still on ( I found this trout in Trader Joes)
2 tablespoon olive oil
3 2-inch pieces of fresh rosemary
1 teaspoon crushed garlic
2 tablespoons slivered almonds
2 tbsp raisins
2 fresh lemons
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Place tin foil on a cooking sheet. Place trout skin side down on foil. Drizzle trout with 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil and season to taste with sea salt and pepper. Place the rosemary on one half of the trout and put the other piece on top with the skin side facing out. Bake in the oven for about 15 minutes until the trout is flaky.
While the fish cooks, heat 1 1/2 tablespoon olive oil over medium low heat in a large skillet. Add garlic and then half the spinach. Add almonds and raisins and gently mix everything. Continue to mix while the spinach cooks until it is wilted. Add the remaining spinach and mix and cook until this is wilted too. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper.
Open up the cooked trout and discard the rosemary. Cut the lemons in half and squeeze the juice out over the fish. Serve with the spinach on the side.
Enjoy!

But if you accept the premise put forth by Chinese medicine, shouldn’t this be a good thing? It would slow down digestion, meaning less of a spike in blood sugar, keeping your insulin levels low and preventing the accumulation of fat.
Also, cold water is much better than warm water. Especially with a slice of lemon or lime.

Thanks for visiting mom! I am looking forward to you participating in and completing your first crossfit workout in Late May! I have fantastic memories of going on walks and runs around our Bellevue house with you over the years…and tearing up every sport the suburbs had to offer.
Thanks for driving all those years to practices, games, and gyms. I love you!
I’m writing this from Christina’s laptop. We just did a version of Runaway Grace, and since nobody knows what it is, we will call it Ring around the Thrusters
its done in teams of two.
5 rounds for time of:
10 Thrusters 95/65 while one person thrusts the other does 10 squats then they switch (interchange squats with 10 pushups, 10 lunges )
400 m run with 65# barbell
DO NOT PUT BAR DOWN for the entire WOD- if you do 10 burpees
