LAY OFF THE GRAINS PEOPLE!
Posted by: | CommentsFor those of you interesting in following along with Sweet Cheeks HQ’s No Grain Challenge, it starts tomorrow on Thursday! Here’s what the ladies of SCHQ have to say about it:
“It’s time again for another Sweet Cheeks HQ food challenge!! We’re giving up grains this time for TWO WEEKS!!! I can just hear you now…
This includes wheat and all processed foods made with wheat or wheat flour, rye and all processed foods made with rye, barley, rice, oats and corn.
Today’s Workout:

HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP = NOT AWESOME.
Posted by: | CommentsWho to believe? A study done by Princeton University recently showed that rats given High Fructose Corn Syrup gained significantly more weight than rats given an equal amount of calories from natural sugar. The Corn Refiner’s Association would have you believe that the study was faulty and that all sugars are created equally. America is in a health crisis; we’ve talked about this before and will continue to do so. What I take away from the video is that the Association is positioning HFCS as a substance that if enjoyed in moderation is relatively harmless. Ok, got that part. However, what they aren’t telling you (beside the fact that they’re full of shit – and are advocating continuing to give this product to children…hmmm…things that are “ok in moderation”…yeah, lets give those to kids) is that HFCS is inundated in SO many of the products that Americans buy. Here is a just short list of some of those products:

SWEET CHEEKS CHALLENGE – NO GRAINS.
Posted by: | CommentsAs you probably noticed last Friday, we included one of Sweet Cheeks HQ’s delicious recipes in this blog. Since the ladies of SCHQ are so damn cool, and we at CPC believe wholeheartedly in their message of combining nutritiousness (yes, it’s a word) with deliciousness we’re going to be featuring one of their recipes every week. We also want to let you know that SCHQ is running a new challenge starting April 1st – No Grains For The Week. Do you think that you can do it? No wheat, rye, sourdough, breads, cakes, pasta, many soups, rice etc. No freakin’ grains people! Personally, I’m going to give this one a go as well. We’re going to have another Paleo Challenge here at CPC in the not too distant future and this is a great way to start to gear up for it. Here’s this weeks recipe care of A-Train and Shirley Brown!
What you’ll need:
2 Fresh artichokes (or more)
1 head of garlic
olive oil
sea salt
1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2. Chop the stem and top off the artichokes. Leave a small base and clip the tops of the leaves with scissors. Rinse the artichokes and let the water drain out.
3. While artichokes are draining, peel the garlic and chop off the tops of clove.
4. Stuff the artichokes with garlic in between the leaves and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil sprinkle with a small amount of salt.
5. Place upright in pan and cover with foil. Roast in oven for1 hour and 20 minutes, until garlic is tender!

THE REDHEAD.
Posted by: | CommentsThe other morning one of your fellow CPC’ers had himself a little bit of a tummy ache (don’t worry Glen, I won’t tell anyone that it was you) and was curious about any natural remedies that would relieve his nausea and upset. I told him to go right to the store and buy some fresh ginger to brew into a tea. He did, and was good as new! Ginger has been used as a natural remedy for many ailments for centuries. Now, science is catching up and researchers around the world are finding that ginger works wonders in the treatment of everything from cancer to migraines. Here are ten health benefits of this powerful herb:
Ovarian Cancer Treatment
Ginger may be powerful weapon in the treatment of ovarian cancer. A study at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center found that ginger powder induces cell death in all ovarian cancer cells to which it was applied.
Colon Cancer Prevention
A study at the University of Minnesota found that ginger may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells.
Morning Sickness
A review of several studies has concluded that ginger is just as effective as vitamin B6 in the treatment of morning sickness.
Motion Sickness Remedy
Ginger has been shown to be an effective remedy for the nausea associated with motion sickness.
Reduces Pain and Inflammation
One study showed that ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and is a powerful natural painkiller. (Hmmm…anyone know anyone who could use natural anti-inflammatory and pain killing substances?)
Heartburn Relief
Ginger has long been used as a natural heartburn remedy. It is most often taken in the form of tea for this purpose.
Cold and Flu Prevention and Treatment
Ginger has long been used as a natural treatment for colds and the flu. Many people also find ginger to be helpful in the case of stomach flus or food poisoning (Ginger is a natural anti-parasitic which is why you are encouraged to eat it along with your raw fish at Arigato’s), which is not surprising given the positive effects ginger has upon the digestive tract.
Migraine Relief
Research has shown that ginger may provide migraine relief due to its ability to stop prostaglandins from causing pain and inflammation in blood vessels.
Menstrual Cramp Relief
In Chinese medicine, ginger tea with brown sugar is used in the treatment of menstrual cramps.
There you have it folks, this wonderful little herb can be added to your paleo dishes or steeped into a tea. Enjoy.

AGAVE = EL DIABLO? QUE LASTIMA!!
Posted by: | CommentsOne of the hardest parts about cooking Paleo treats in order to bring them to us to sample here at CPC has got to be the substitution of sugar (from what I’ve heard). Up until recently I thought that agave was a great substitute. However, CFLA’s own Becca Borawski recently posted an article on the subject that is quite eye opening. Click on the link to read the whole article, here is snippet that I thought was interesting.
“Agave “nectar” is not made from the sap of the yucca or agave plant but from the starch of the giant pineapple-like, root bulb. The principal constituent of the agave root is starch, similar to the starch in corn or rice, and a complex carbohydrate called inulin, which is made up of chains of fructose molecules. Technically a highly indigestible fiber, inulin, which does not taste sweet, comprises about half of the carbohydrate content of agave.
The process by which agave glucose and inulin are converted into “nectar” is similar to the process by which corn starch is converted into HFCS. The agave starch is subject to an enzymatic and chemical process that converts the starch into a fructose-rich syrup—anywhere from 70 percent fructose and higher according to the agave nectar chemical profiles posted on agave nectar websites. Compare that to the typical fructose content of high fructose corn syrup (55%)!”
Is agave now in the same category as dairy?!! (Queso es malo) Please post your thoughts to the comments section.
Today’s Agave Free Workout:
”Push it, Push it real good!” (Thanks to Matt Beals of CF Salt Lake City for this one)
100 Push Presses for Time (95#/65#)
Every minute on the minute, perform 10 Push Ups then return to pressing.
GOODBYE PARKING LOT, HELLO PULL UPS.
Posted by: | CommentsSo yes, there are 8 new holes outside in the soon-to-be-no-longer-for-parking parking area! Over the weekend, with help, carb-laden beverages and entertainment being supplied by Glen, Eric and I busted out a jackhammer and dug some holes. Was this merely an exercise in exercise? Perhaps. Or was it possibly the first stage of CPC’s new Outdoor Awesomeness Contraption? Perhaps as well. Only time will tell…
Ok, time has come. The management knows, thanks to all of you spreading the word about what goes on here, that we are growing. Eric and I have decided to take full advantage of Santa Barbara’s nearly perfect year round weather and expand out into the parking lot. Yep, that means that this summer we’re going to be doing a lot of workouts out in the sun and clean ocean air. Unfortunately this also means that our beloved little parking lot will soon only be used for working out and 4th of July shenanigans but it’s well worth it. Stay tuned; good outdoorsy type things are on the way!

BASELINE WEEK. PART DUEX.
Posted by: | Comments
It’s that time again…BASELINE WEEK is upon us! It’s time for our quarterly progress check to measure just how much awesomer you all are now compared to when you walked in our doors for your Intro. Starting on Monday, we’re all going to be Baselining our little butts off! For those of you that might have possibly forgotten what the Baseline is, it is: 1 time through for time of: 500 M Row – 40 Squats – 30 Sit Ups – 20 Push Ups- 10 Pull Ups.
Here’s a really sweet Paleo Recipe care of Sweet Cheeks HQ for those of you that are thinking about doing some cooking this weekend – The Cheek’s Sweet Cheeseless Meetza! (Courtesy of the lovely, well-developed-CrossFit-cheek-having ladies over at SCHQ)
Cheese-less Meatza
1 pound hamburger
1 pound Italian sausage, uncooked and squeezed out of it’s casing
1 teaspoon sea salt (optional)
½ teaspoon pepper
2 teaspoons garlic powder
2 teaspoons oregano
Paleo tomato sauce
1 can tomato paste 1/2 cup water or to desired thickness 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Meatza toppings!!
Preheat the oven to 370 degrees.
Mix the hamburger meat and sausage, salt, pepper, oregano and garlic powder together. Spread the meat out on a cookie sheet or mold into whatever shape desired. Make sure the meat is spread fairly thin, but without holes and round the edges up to make a crust. Cook in oven for 10 minutes.
In the meantime, you have two tasks. One – chop up and sauté your Meatza toppings in a bit of olive oil. Two – Mix together the tomato paste, water, oregano and garlic powder to create a Meatza sauce.
Once the Meatza is done cooking, pour off the grease and immediately cover the meat with the tomato sauce to warm up the sauce. (or you can warm the sauce in a pan first, the other way is just easier!) Add your toppings and have a Meatza party!
Enjoy!

HANDSTAND PUSH UPS.
Posted by: | CommentsLast week we saw a whole lot of you making drastic improvements in your handstand push ups! Why do we work on a movement like that you ask? Well here you go…
Handstand pushups increase the load on the triceps brachii muscles significantly over regular pushups, with the arms having to hold almost 100% of the body’s weight rather than an average of 60% during normal pushups. Load is also shifted from the pectoralis major muscle to the anterior (front) deltoids and lateral (side) deltoids due to the shoulders exerting in adduction while externally rotated, rather than transverse flexion.
In free-standing handstand pushups, the core muscles and hand muscles are both used to keep the body balanced, from falling over back, forward, or to either side, and to maintain posture. This makes it a much stronger exercise for the wrist flexors, core and legs compared to regular pushups. After the event on Sunday we watched a guy bang out 3 free standing handstand push ups and I do believe that I have another goal to add to the list now, it was pretty awesome to witness.
