SWEET CHEEKS CHALLENGE – NO GRAINS.

By

Migs making sure that Chuck didn't have to run alone - AWESOME!!

As you probably noticed last Friday, we included one of Sweet Cheeks HQ’s delicious recipes in this blog.  Since the ladies of SCHQ are so damn cool, and we at CPC believe wholeheartedly in their message of combining nutritiousness (yes, it’s a word) with deliciousness we’re going to be featuring one of their recipes every week.  We also want to let you know that SCHQ is running a new challenge starting April 1st – No Grains For The Week.  Do you think that you can do it?  No wheat, rye, sourdough, breads, cakes, pasta, many soups, rice etc.  No freakin’ grains people!  Personally, I’m going to give this one a go as well.  We’re going to have another Paleo Challenge here at CPC in the not too distant future and this is a great way to start to gear up for it.  Here’s this weeks recipe care of A-Train and Shirley Brown!

What you’ll need:
2 Fresh artichokes (or more)
1 head of garlic
olive oil
sea salt

Artichokes in the shape of cheeks...yummy!

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees
2. Chop the stem and top off the artichokes. Leave a small base and clip the tops of the leaves with scissors. Rinse the artichokes and let the water drain out.
3. While artichokes are draining, peel the garlic and chop off the tops of clove.
4. Stuff the artichokes with garlic in between the leaves and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil sprinkle with a small amount of salt.
5. Place upright in pan and cover with foil. Roast in oven for1 hour and 20 minutes, until garlic is tender!

Multiple awesomeness in todays blog. Not only are we being graced with cool recipes but now we’ve got not one, not two but three challenges on the horizon. I feel more prepared for Paleo now that I’ve been down that road once before, I look forward to it again and doing it better this time around.

Artichokes in the shape of cheeks…HAHAHAHA!!

The Cheeks and our recipes will be here to help you with your Paleo challenge. Eating Paleo although it takes a little more thought, can actually be quite enjoyable. Our no grain challenge is a baby step towards a Paleo lifestyle. I hope you all participate with us!! Starts April 1st, more details to come next week.

No grains through EASTER…. uggg…. time to get creative with my paleo baking this weekend, so I can still have some yummy Easter breakfast!! Ha. I am slowly but surely getting ready for this Paleo challenge. Lets do this!! I WANT A BIG SHOUT OUT TO MIGS and many other crossfitter, who have not left the little people with short stubby legs (me), no natual running ability (me), and did I say stubby legs… behind while running, pushing me to go further and faster than I have before. You guys rock!!

Articheeks?

Re: the photo, knowing that Miguel was tired from having finished the WOD in a significantly quicker time than me (along with everybody freaking else), I actually walked most of that lap to, uh, give him a break. (The previous 2 laps I had mostly walked to give me a break.) The photo shows the very end when, after said break, I had just enough energy left to try to move a little faster to try to impress the crowd. But all seriousness aside, thanks Miguel!

Also, children, this photo can serve as a warning of what 50+ years of non-paleo eating (and non-exercising) can do to you. You too can look like death warmed over.

Artichokes look more breastlike than cheeks IMO!
I’m extremely excited about the challenges as my eating habits (and drinking) are my biggest drawbacks. The routine recipes from sweetcheeks are much appreciated and I look forward to trying my luck with grain and paleo challenges!

Chuck, I think you deserve to congratulate yourself for making the effort to get out there and improve your quality of life at this point, rather then just doing what you’ve always done. After 50+ years it can’t be easy to make such a huge change in such a short time. That effort alone combined with what we do at CPC will have you feeling the best you’ve ever felt in no time.

Chuck, check out this blog thread on the main site: http://www.board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=39289

Even though I’m not yet to 50, I participate. I can’t wait to do a WOD with you.

Thanks Baker–I’m still looking forward to that “feeling the best you’ve ever felt in no time”! Right now any good feelings are purely psychological (which is still good), and I’m using ibuprofen to cover the rest.

And thanks Claw–that thread looks interesting. But right now I have to go warm up for the noon class (and I’m hoping to do my Baseline today, which I’m sure will be significantly quicker than my first one back in December, even if I die halfway through). I’m also looking forward to meeting the infamous “Claw” one of these days.

Actually, I think every CF club needs a guy like me. Whenever we do group workouts, I’m the guy that provides you those little extra rest breaks while you’re waiting for me to catch up.

Baseline followup report:

Baseline time today was 7:04 (vs. my first time of 11:14 3 months ago; that’s a 4:10 drop, or about 37%!) To pull that % drop off again I’d need to get down to about 4:27, which would put me in the CrossFit “Expert” category. Right now I’m almost an “Apprentice” (if I were a woman and presumably if I wasn’t using the black rubber band for the pullups). And I was able to do regular pushups this time (vs. from-the-knees last time).

Thanks one & all (and thanks ibuprofen) for helping me achieve this after a little more than 2 months of CrossFit
