COMFORT ZONE.

By Traver

Why is it that CrossFit is more effective than the traditional workout routine?  I get this question almost every time that someone new comes in to check out our gym.  In my opinion the greatest strength of CrossFit training, both in the gym and almost more importantly, outside of the gym is this – everyday we are going to make you step outside of your comfort zone. That’s it, plain and simple.  How often at 24 Hour Fitness or Spectrum do you really see people do this?  Do people there continually and on a regular basis do things that they’d never done before?  I’ll unequivocally say, “Not on your life.”
Here’s the rub though folks – every time that you step outside of your comfort zone, as painful as it’s going to be (and it will be just about every time), your comfort zone grows.  What you thought of as “difficult” or even “impossible” today will be a walk in the park tomorrow. How many of you now use your 3 Rep or even 1 Rep Max from a year ago as a warm up today?  How many of you regularly do something for work that the first time you tried it was terrifying?
If you aren’t getting the results that you’d like to, either in the gym or in your personal/professional lives, take an honest look at just how often you are truly stepping outside of your comfort zone.  I’d be willing to bet that it’s not as often or as you could be.  As OPT loves to say, “Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”   This holds true for CrossFit, for business, for academics and really any and all areas of your life.  Be great today.

Wow, story of my life! I would not even be at Crossfit if I had not gone outside of my comfort zone. I can say this because of where I am at, but coming to a gym where everyone is in great shape can be very intimidating, but I had to step back and say one day that will be me, which then translates the intimidation to motivation! Keep up the great work guys, and just keep pushing out comfort zones :0)

Great Post!! Living outside of your comfort zone builds character and creates some of life’s best experiences!

Can’t argue with this, and I’ve been thoroughly uncomfortable since yesterday’s workout. And yet I’m planning to come back soon for more.

Question: who or what is OPT?

5

Chuck it stands for Optimum Performance Training. It’s a crossfit affiliate in Canada, owned by James ‘OPT’ Fitzgerald. OPT sort of became his nickname.

He’s an amazing Crossfitter. Very talented.

my mom always had this magnet on the refrigerator that said “do one thing every day that scares you.” probably the worst advice for someone like me to see every time i go to drink milk out of the carton, but i think it fits nicely in this context.

This is a great post, TB. It encapsulates the core of what we do here. I can confidently say that anytime I’ve achieved something in my life that I feel is noteworthy, it’s because I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone. Adversely, I can also say that often times when I look back on something I regret, it’s because I decided to take an easier path. Pain and discomfort are momentary, but you will always remember the times you achieved a higher goal.

CrossFit doesn’t JUST make us considerably fitter than the average joe. It gives us the confidence to push through adversity. More times than not, we surprise ourselves. Even better is that when you’re on that 100th rep of “Karen” or midway through the “Filthy Fifty,” you can look to either direction and know your fellow CPC’er is pushing it to the limit too. There’s just something really cool about that.

Yep, all the best things I’ve done in my life: Getting married, living in Norway, going to law school, opening my own business, doing Karen, etc. scared the crap out of me before I started them.
