WHAT’S YOUR SPORT?
ByWelcome Nat and Gigi!! Mother and daughter stepping up!
For Eric it’s skiing and playing water polo. Personally, I’m never happier than when I’m paddling out on a surfboard or trying to submit my opponent on a jiu-jitsu mat. Gratefully, for the both of us, CrossFit has made our personal sports all the more enjoyable. It’s made our balance better, our strength take massive leaps, our endurance befuddle people and we’ve developed a serious case of confidence. I love CrossFit, that’s a fact. That being said, even though I enjoy the amazing feeling that comes from completing a CrossFit workout, I love how they affect my other sports even more. We’d like to hear from all of you about what it is, outside of our particular gym that you love to do? If it’s not a sport, but an activity that is all your own, that’s more than ok too. Please share! (Non-CPC’ers, feel free to chime in as well)
Today’s Workout:
5 Rounds of:
1 Minute of Sumo Deadlift High Pulls
1 Minute of Ring Push Ups
1 Minute of sweet rest

For me it would have to be two opposing sports, soccer and diving. I say opposing because one is a team sport and the other is one that is done with other people but you are inherently on your own.
I’ve played soccer since I was 4 and have always loved the team aspect of it as well as the different abilities it calls upon: strength, speed, flexibility, stamina, pretty much the things Crossfit focuses on. I always loved that feeling of getting up early on a Saturday and getting to the field with the sun warming the grass while it’s still wet with dew. The feeling of watching the ball hit the back of the net after you ran it down the field. The support you get from your teammates.
Conversely, I love diving for different reasons. While we think of and train new divers that this is a “buddy” sport. More experienced people actually do this stuff on their own and even if you are with one or two people you still have to be self sufficient in case of an accident or an emergency. What I always loved about diving was the feeling of being suspended in the water column, hovering in place and watching the underwater world go by around me. When you dive your almost entirely in silence, you can’t talk and the only sound you sometimes hear is that of your bubbles. When I dive it reminds me of, compared to the bigger picture, how small I am.

Crossfit is my sport. I don’t really play anything else, but I ski. I’m looking forward to trying out my new strength on the slopes of Mammoth.
Even though I’m fit, I don’t consider myself especially coordinated. Maybe that’s leftover baggage from my pre-fit past, but there you go.

Hiking/ leisurely-ish bike riding/ small hill snow boarding/ and working out.
Went hiking last weekend and it was easy, although we were on an easy trail, so next time I do the Cathedral Peak hike (which I did with Donnie a couple weeks into dating and it was hell… every cuss word I could think of came out of my mouth!) or a backpacking trip I’ll be able to see the Crossfit difference.
Honestly, I’ve never looked at it from the prespective of doing Crossfit so that other areas of my life are better/ easier. I do Crossfit because it’s a hobby I really enjoy. I suppose if I was to go workout with someone else for fun and do their “routine” I’d probably find that Crossfit helps me do that person’s workout and not even break a sweat

Soccer and currently investigating mountaineering/hiking … anyone up for Mt. Hood Summer 2010?
Crossfit has helped me fully recover from lame knee surgery. Now I can confidently lace up my soccer cleats and hit the pitch without that looming fear of injuring myself again. This has left a huge sense of accomplishment and drive to take up new sports in the future. Mountaineering (as noted above), golf & volleyball… anyone game?

I have three favorite sports that I love to do outside of crossfit. That’s Surfing, Mountain Biking and Marathon Running. All these activities have been massivley amplified by the fact that I do crossfit. In surfing I have the upper body to help me paddle out and sometimes it’s crazy out there trying to get through so narly white water, but it’s not a problem for me. I have freiends that I have taken out that are so much bigger then me but are exhausted by the task of going through white water. HA!
In Mountain biking you need some serious quads to climb some serious uphill climbs but it makes it alot easier to handle if your doing crossfit. I have the endurance to climb longer on the bike and not be wiped out so I really enjoy the down slopes.
Marathon running I have more endurance then ever before and no pain after tackling all those miles. Recently in June I finshed another marathon in Hawaii and I went surfing 3 hours later and did a huge volcano hike the following day. No pain and I felt great! Man I love me some Crossfit!!!
